Cuenca is a charming city in southern Castilla, whose historic center has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perched on a rocky hill, some parts rise up to 946 meters above sea level, and its most iconic feature—the famous “hanging houses”—seems to float dramatically over the Júcar River.
While the modern part of the city (“Ciudad Nueva”) lies in the valley, the old town crowns the hill. Reaching it can be a bit of a climb, with steep stairways adding to the adventure.
On our trip, an official guide will lead us through the city’s highlights: the Church of San Pedro, the Plaza Mayor with its stunning Cathedral and Town Hall framed by three arches, the Museum of Sciences, the road by the Mangana Tower, and a viewpoint offering sweeping views of modern Cuenca.
Just outside the city, in Valdecabras, lies the Enchanted City—one of Spain’s most spectacular natural wonders. Hidden in the Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park and surrounded by towering pines, this landscape of whimsical rock formations showcases the beauty of the karst geological process. Declared a Natural Site of National Interest in 1929, it remains a magical place to explore nature’s artistry.
