Alarcón rises on a rocky hill, almost entirely surrounded by a loop of the Júcar River. In the 8th century, an Arab fortress was built on the river’s promontory, turning the site into a key strategic stronghold.
Our hike will lead us through some of the region’s most stunning landscapes, offering breathtaking views and the thrill of discovering hidden corners along the way.
A Journey Through Time
Arriving in Alarcón feels like traveling back in time. A narrow stretch of land between two curves of the river — just wide enough for the road — guides you through a series of medieval gates into the heart of the village.
Historical and Artistic Heritage
Alarcón has been granted artistic and historical status thanks to its dramatic cliffside setting above the Júcar River, combined with its preserved medieval atmosphere and remarkable architectural heritage.
Cuenca
Cuenca is a small city in southern Castilla whose historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Uniquely positioned on a rocky hill, parts of the city reach 946 meters above sea level, and its famous hanging houses overlook the Júcar River.
While the modern “New Town” lies in the valley below, the historic center remains perched on the hill. Reaching it can be a bit demanding, as some of the stairways are quite steep — but the views make the climb worthwhile.
