NIE

Your essential identification number in Spain

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the first thing you will need when you arrive in Spain. Without it, almost nothing moves — no bank account, no rental contract, no work, no tax registration. Getting it sorted early is one of the most important steps of any relocation.

What the NIE is for

• Opening a Spanish bank account
• Signing a rental contract or purchasing property
• Working or registering as self-employed (autónomo)
• Paying taxes and setting up utilities

What you will need

• Passport (original + copy)
• Completed EX-15 form (NIE application)
• Proof of payment of the 790-012 fee
• Justification of why you need the NIE (employment contract, purchase agreement, etc.)

Step by step

1. Fill in form EX-15 before your appointment
2. Pay the 790-012 fee online or at a bank and keep the receipt
3. Book your appointment online via the Police portal
4. Attend your appointment at Calle Bailén with all required documents
5. Receive your NIE number — either on the day or shortly after
